The college outing clubs and recreation programs that are part of College Outside (AKA you guys) are the bread and butter of everything we do. So it’s about time they’re recognized for it. These club features are a place for our clubs to tell their craziest stories, best adventures, and what makes them truly unique and/or the best club to ever exist. We’ll let you guys debate that. We already know how cool they are, now everyone else can too.
So, without further ado, meet the University of Delaware Outing Club. UDOC offers opportunities for all University of Delaware students to “Do it Outside.” Whether it’s backpacking, climbing, hiking, rafting, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, paintballing, ziplining, skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing, UDOC is for sure having an awesome time doing it. These are my kind of people.
1. Describe the essence of your club in a sentence or two. What makes you guys you!
UDOC is the most active club on campus. We have members who have tons of experience, like hiking the entire AT and climbing Denali, to members who have never camped or hiked before. Our trips have good vibes with lots of hype for the outdoors, allowing everyone to enjoy themselves and let their freak flag fly.
2. What is your favorite event that you put on?
Every October we have a pumpkin carving open meeting. We have chili-mac (mac n cheese and chili), liquid thin mints (hot chocolate and mint tea), meat sticks, s’mores, and tons of candy. This year we carved 40 pumpkins around a bonfire.
3. Tell us your deepest, darkest secrets… What’s something you wouldn’t want your mom to know about the happenings of your club?
Hahaha our secrets stay with us and away from our parents and Alex Keen (our director). You’ll just have to join us around a bonfire to find out.
4. Do you have any absolutely legendary traditions?
We host a huge reel rock screening screening every year with lots of raffle prizes.
5. What are you most proud of about your club?
Every year for the past 50 years our club has pushed the limits and our budget to take us further and do new things. We haven’t run out of new ideas yet.
6. If you could give a piece of sage advice from your club to the world what would it be?
If you go with hype, participants will follow.
7. Anything else you’d like to add…
We love how supportive the outdoor community is!
We do too, UDOC. If you’d like to live up to this supportive reputation, check out their Instagram page @delawareoutingclub. They also travel to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Florida by university mini-van or plane (luckies), so if you see them in your area make sure to say hello and show them around!
If your club would like to be featured on College Outside (who wouldn’t want to be amiright?) fill out the form here.
